Perennials, Annuals, and More
Del Carey started Carey's Greenhouse in 2012. From 1981 to 1988 he was Assistant Gardener and Groundskeeper at Pendarvis, where he learned a lot about gardening. He inherited his love of growing things from his maternal grandparents who were both dairy farmers and gardeners. Although some plants are grown from bulbs and seeds, the vast majority of offerings come from cuttings and transplantings of plants cultivated and grown by the Careys and O'Briens for generations, not only from the family farm south of Truman but also the Carey residence in town. In 2015, Carey purchased a new house with a full acre of land to expand these gardens and provide more variety.
For the past five years our best selling plants have been hostas (4 varieties now expanded to 8), lilacs, day lilies, ferns, and irises. Ground covers such as lily-of-the-valley, woodland violets, snow-on-the-mountain, creeping phlox, and periwinkle have also been popular. Climbing plants, hanging baskets, and climbing baskets are occasionally available.
